Should we keep core community on Matrix? What should happen to the Nym Matrix server?
Currently the core Nym community lives on the Nym Matrix server. There are various community groups and channels Telegram and Discord too, but Nym node operators and Nym Squad League contributors rely on Matrix to receive important updates.
Discussion
Many of you told me that you would prefer other platforms and are not big fans of Matrix. I hear you! Matrix is great in terms of privacy and it also allows us to host our own server (unlike Telegram or Discord). But UI and UX can be clunky and it’s yet another app to install and keep an eye on for everyone.
So what do you think?
Do you like Matrix?
What other messaging apps would you prefer? Discord? Telegram? Both? Neither?
Do you think core community stuff should stay on Matrix, or should we migrate? If migrate, where should we migrate?
Any other thoughts?
Please share you thoughts below and let’s decide together! Next week we will vote on the platform we are going to use in the future. This discussion will inform the voting options and process.
Yes, you must carry on with Matrix. It is somewhat surprising that a PRIVACY project is even asking people about it. I understand that most in Nym community uses Google (lol), TG and all other rubbish products, which is exceptionally disappointing and looks strange (to say at least). Anyway, if you are migrating to TG, discord, other rubbish app for core communication - I am not coming. I am not as active in the community anyway but you asked to share thoughts.
I did not and do not like matrix. Telegram is convenient for quick communications, but as we know, it is not very private. In my opinion, you can stop at the forum, it’s a cool tool and give access to the branches by role so that evil eyes don’t see information they don’t need)
The answer to this question depends on the perspective we consider. If we’re focusing on privacy, then yes, Matrix is indeed a beneficial platform. However, with the upcoming VPN launch, users might prefer asking questions on Telegram, as it allows for more immediate and comfortable interaction with the community instead of reaching out to support for issues.
Using any platform other than Telegram could introduce complications. Given that Telegram is the most commonly used platform, I recommend that we utilize it for our core community communications.
It feels contradictory to seek privacy on social media, as no platform is entirely secure. At best, you can choose the “least risky” option. That’s why I’d recommend focusing on a platform where the most people are already connected or have the potential to connect.
I think Matrix can be left for the communication of the project team , possibly including ambassadors.
This is not necessary for a wide user. Everyone is used to Telegram or Discord. It is better to develop a community and do some kind of interactive there, in Discord. This is a generally accepted norm
But yes, using Matrix is canon for a project that fights for privacy. This is unequivocal and it should be left as well. But our community is mainly in Discord
Crazy that nym seriously considers switching to a shitty walled garden like telegram for their core communication. This makes me seriously consider the sincerity of the project or whether the team is already compromised by malicious actors. One cannot even access telegram without registering with a phone number and nym considers switching there to be more accessible?
People serious enough to be node operators should absolutely be able to use matrix.
I’ve been crypto since I was 21 and I use Telegram all the time. I created a community there, read a lot of opinion leaders and use it in my everyday life.
And in general, a lot of project representatives who were afraid of or despised telegram are now actively creating training channels there and various private chats for developers/project representatives. That’s why I use Telegram more and more every day.
Yes, Matrix may be safer in terms of user data. And I probably shouldn’t give it up completely, but at the moment it’s a local messenger for NYM, while Telegram is a messenger for all the projects I participate and work in.
Take it easy, buddy.
Nowadays, your e-mail is no different than your cell phone number. Even to create a gmail account you need to verify your cell phone.
Anyway, it’s a matter of taste and convenience. Everyone has their own choice.
The key word in this text, which it seems not everyone noticed, is the word “Core” in connection with “community.” For the group of people this phrase refers to, I don’t think using Matrix should be an issue or cause dissatisfaction. It should simply be a given. The team and its closest community can communicate comfortably where it’s safest to do so. Meanwhile, Telegram and Discord can be used for brand promotion, audience expansion, and other outreach activities. Matrix serves as the next level for those who want to stay tuned in and feel directly connected to what the team is working on.
So, in my personal opinion, this doesn’t even need to be discussed. The only thing we could do is to separate public information from “not for everyone” information.
There are several privacy-minded email providers that do not ask for a phone number. Telegram completely excludes anybody not using a phone to sign up.
I’m not even able to read the current telegram nym channels because the in-browser preview function doesn’t work most of the time. Switching to such a proprietary and even politically controversial app without urgent need when a valid solution already exists is complete insanity.
I think telegram should be used for broader community because more people are on telegram and you can easily reach out to them. However matrix should be maintained for core community members.
I think Matrix should stay. The main communication of the interested part of the community and the team takes place in it, and there are conversations on the matter, other services can be used for side tasks (Quiz, help, answers to similar questions, etc.)
wow, thanks for your thoughts, everyone. Nice to see strong support for Matrix, based on some of my DMs I was expecting you guys to be split on the issue.
Nym’s community platform strategy
Our platform strategy was set up so that everyone can find us and interact with us and the community on platforms which they are already on even if they are not using tools like Matrix. We consider Telegram and Discord to be the “town square” where you would not have private, sensitive or very important conversations. For those, we have the “Nym office”, which is the self-hosted Nym community Matrix server It looks like most of you like this approach so let’s keep it!
The great thing about Matrix was that the Nym Team also used it for its internal comms. We had Matrix open all day, creating a natural bridge between core community and core team. This changed recently, as the Nym team has migrated to Zulip for internal comms.
The vote
Like I said, I started this thread to inform a possible vote later this week. Since we’re keeping the town square - Nym office approach, the questions to discuss should be the following:
1. does the community want a Nym Community Zulip server? 2. If yes, should we migrate the “Nym office” there, or keep it parallel to Matrix?
Pros of Zulip
Nym team lives there, all day every day
unique and outstanding structure and functionality, more mature interface
better search
open source, possible to self-host, great dev team and community
Cons of Zulip
different from other chat apps/platforms, so there is a learning curve
No push notifications on mobile (only in paid plan)
yet another new app to install and keep an eye on
Thoughts?
What do you guys think? Do you want a Nym community Zulip server? Have you used Zulip before?
I think that the matrix is not needed, it is better to use telegram. The matrix has too much unnecessary stuff and an unfriendly interface; access to it is difficult. Everyone is used to telegram and everything is done much easier there
