Submission for Writing Program

2) Why I want to participate:

I’m starting my specialization in cybersecurity in April at École 42 (Campus Rio), so being part of this program would be the perfect opportunity to document and share my technical studies.

Additionally, I love writing. Before becoming a programmer, I studied philosophy and psychology and published some articles in science, technology and society domain (though not directly related to privacy). I believe I have a talent for writing and can effectively balance technical content with language accessible to a general audience.

3) Topics I’m most interested in:

Metadata:
Suggestion for article:

  • It’s easy to publicly extract your metadata – show a program that extract images from a website and analyses it’s metadata)

History of internet
Suggestion for article:

  • Why TCP/UDP headers expose your metadata – I’m currently working on this article, I am arguing that the decentralization of the structure of the Internet was born in a cold war context, to increase the resilience of the American communication system against a possible Russian attack. I talk about Paul Baran, ARPANET and the development of packet swicthing technology as the reason for our metadata being publicly exposed. The main reference for this argument is Inventing the Internet, by J. Abbate.

Networks:

  • What is a network? (explain basic notions as IP, ISP, gateways etc.)
  • History of mixnets (David Chaum, 80’s, further implementations)

Social engineering and database leaks

  • Analyze famous database leaks: Brazil’s Unified Health Service, Uber, Neon Bank.

Privacy and Society:

  • Surveillance Capitalism
  • AI, ML, public data, automation and the future of work: (References: A. Benavav, Phil Jones)
