State of NYM fails - fair, real short review

I love the NYM idea, I would throw lots of crypto money to donate. Good understanding of the network topology helping against global attacker.

I been watching the project for some time I decided to finally give it a go. I’m not happy.

  1. The fast mode isn’t fast at all. Coming out of a Tor node? Tough luck Wireguard UDP only.

  2. The anonymous mode can’t be used at all. Somehow it connected after 5 tries but can’t load anything. Huge issue with MTU support.

  3. NYM app is heavily using DNS. Not a good idea only adds additional attack surface as its very prone to redirects (much more likely than bgp attacks). Should have some hardcoded IPs for ability to connect. We shouldn’t be forced to use DNS within it. DHT even if you want to go the extra mile

  4. On the Nym app it says bandwidth 2GB? While trying to connect (never was able to browse a site), I exhausted it to 1.85 GB. Is this a bug or a joke that its only 2GB bandwidth? Why isn’t this clear when people are purchasing subscriptions? I basically wasted the 2 year plan for 2gb allowance :frowning:

Why is this focused on random stuff, tokens, ai slop “architecture of recovery” posts and the rest when speed, basic function is missing? Serious sia.tech vibes unfortunately.

I love the idea, I love the tech, massive potential, I don’t love the direction and how basic problems aren’t solved first. Make it useable and people will come.

Thank you for taking the time to share this feedback. It’s super useful.

Speed, mixnet stability, MTU, the DNS stuff are all on the radar and being worked on. We’re implementing better benchmarks on the dev-side so the connection and stability issues never make it to the production apps in the future.

Regarding #4, the 2TB display can be confusing at first since it’s not necessarily showing your “usage”. NymVPN doesn’t link your activity to your account. your device instead uses cryptographic tickets to prove access rights without identifying you. Those tickets each have a data allowance attached, and the bandwidth bar drops by 25GB every time you connect to a new gateway - not based on what you actually downloaded. With some recent updates, these should get replenished automatically time to time and won’t actually prevent you from connecting. Since the fix is still quite recent, in case you do run out, we can always reset your bandwidth upon request: https://support.nym.com/hc/en-us/requests/new

I have the same problem, I have it setup on the router, I left home for two weeks and kept the vpn running and it uses 700GB just for idle traffic.

Again, that’s not the usage per se. We have some upcoming changes to the UI so it can be explained better. But the unused tickets for usage are simply added back at regular intervals now. So, reaching bandwidth limit won’t prevent you from connecting unless your actual usage is closer to 2TB. More info:
