How We Talk About Nym - Community Call #2620

:megaphone: How We Talk About Nym - Community Call #2620

@jayapapaya (CSO, Nym) is back on the call with @sudonym for a look at where Nym’s marketing is headed and how the community can help spread the word. Requested straight from the community, and it turned into more than a marketing update - it’s a candid read on how the VPN market, the AI landscape, and the cultural shift toward trust-through-friends are colliding right now.

Jaya from Copenhagen, Sudo from Portugal under an orange heat warning. Big thanks to everyone who joined live.

:motorway: Roadmap Update

Q2 is a wrap and there’s a lot to show for it:

  • LUIS post-quantum protocol shipped early in Q2 - NymVPN is now post-quantum
  • Ad blocker + split tunneling landed via the Brave partnership
  • Wallet integrations: Edge Wallet live. Zottle, Zingo, and Kohaku in progress
  • Browser integrations: two collaborations in development, one already in active dev work

Two things Sudo is especially hyped about, both coming soon:

  • Cover traffic update - the first real step toward making the mixnet fast enough for more than text-only use cases
  • Per-app / per-mode split tunneling - assign clear net, fast mode, or anonymous mode on a per-app basis. Jaya coined a name on the spot: Mixed Tunneling

And: a public roadmap relaunches with a mechanism for the community to submit feature requests. Loud enough asks will move things up the priority list.

:chart_increasing: What’s Actually Happening in VPN Marketing

Jaya laid out the honest picture. Traditional VPN marketing is dominated by huge budgets competing on price and speed - two axes Nym can’t (and shouldn’t) win on. Privacy-focused VPN marketing is growing, which is generally good, but the space is crowded by Nord, Express, and the rest of the incumbents with mature ad machines.

Nym’s year-one marketing did what it needed to: got a product out, got Nym on the VPN map, generated reviews, established credibility. But it didn’t quite reach the audiences that actually need NymVPN most.

:globe_with_meridians: The Cultural Shift Nobody Can Ignore

Two things are breaking traditional marketing at the same time:

  1. AI is eating search. SEO becomes AIO (AI Optimization) - is your product’s core messaging picked up by LLM scrapers? Are you optimizing for agent funnels? Unresolved but critical questions.
  2. Ad fatigue is real. Ten years of hyper-targeted ads have left people distrustful of anything they’re shown online.

The predictable reaction: people revert to human. Trust flows through friends, micro-influencers, group chats. This isn’t just marketing trivia - it’s a cultural shift.

“The world is crazy right now, AI is blowing the information space to bits, who do we trust? We trust our friends.”

:bullseye: The New Marketing Strategy

The playbook is being rewritten:

  • Wind down big ad spend. Limited returns, crowded field, doesn’t play to Nym’s strengths.
  • Lean into community first. NSL, direct partnerships, curated influencer collaborations aligned with the mission.
  • Follow real need geographically. Not “target Europe” or “target the US” - track where privacy and censorship resistance are most acute. Age verification rolling out across many countries in 2026-2027 is dragging previously “safe” countries into that same bucket.

Current focus regions for the influencer push: Russia, China, UK.

:trophy: NSL and the Community Marketing Push

Jaya’s summary of the Nym Squad League: an open invitation to contribute in whatever way fits your skill - code review, running nodes, running events, creating content, translating, spreading the word. Contributions earn NYM tokens from the Squad Wealth Fund (funded by delegation rewards routed to the community treasury by design, rather than back to the company).

The showcase example this week: the Russia marketing push led by community member Uncle Lem (me, lol). What started as a suggestion - “why not a Telegram bot for NymVPN subscriptions in a region where everyone’s Telegram-native?” - grew into a full research package (target audience, competitor bots, regional influencer list) and then a real collaboration.

Placements running now:

  • Maxim Katz YouTube video (subtitled in English)
  • Varlamov Telegram post
  • More coming

Sudo’s takeaway for other contributors:

“If you have any cool ideas like that - key knowledge of your specific region, or how we could get to people in your country - reach out. It may grow into something as big as this project.”

:red_question_mark: Q&A Highlights

Q: NYM token value concerns for node operators - what would you tell them?
Token is at an all-time low, the team is conscious of it. That’s why the service grants program exists - operators should reach out so they’re not running at a loss. Reward algorithm adjustments are also being explored.

Q: Should Nym lean into AI more in the marketing?
Sudo: no. AI fatigue is real, branding everything with “AI” reads as BS at this point.
Jaya nuanced it: Nym seriously considered making AI (rather than the NSA) its primary antagonist a couple of years ago. Meredith Whitaker’s phrase from Signal captures why:

“AI is fundamentally a surveillance derivative.”

But the picture is more complex now. AI has real utility, and agents are becoming the primary online actors more than humans. So Nym is looking at securing agent traffic and pipeline use cases - not marketing itself as an “AI product.”

Q: What would Nym do with an unlimited budget?
Jaya: not “everywhere all at once” - the opposite. Deep research into concrete regional tech stacks and specific needs, then approach people where Nym can deliver real value. Combine with awareness marketing in the right contexts.
Sudo: awareness marketing at scale, but only with real claims - and pointedly, going on offense against the inaccurate claims that dominate VPN advertising today.

Q: NYM listing on US-accessible centralized exchanges?
A big topic internally right now. Jaya will report back in channels.

Q: Tor-style in-person workshops and training materials?
Great suggestion, being added to NSL resources. Materials for exactly this are already being prepared as part of the affiliate/referral program push.

:gem_stone: Alpha Drop - swap.nym.com is Live

Jaya dropped this near the end: swap.nym.com is now live on mainnet in beta. Swap between native NYM, BTC, ETH, USDT, USDC, and ERC-20 NYM. No big announcement yet - the community gets first look.

For context on the age verification wave Sudo referenced, the previous community call with Theo covers it at length.

Thanks to Jaya for coming back on, and to the community members carrying the marketing torch in ways big and small.
