Community call #2616 - 🚀 NymVPN's biggest update yet + Referral program is live

:wrapped_gift: NymVPN Referral Program Goes Live - Free Months, NYM Rewards & The Squad League Push

A more chatty community call this week. @sudonym hosted Casey Ford (head of comms at Nym) from Brussels - 32°C heat wave, “going back to the United States soon where it’ll be 43, looking forward to that” - to launch something the team has been cooking for weeks: the NymVPN Referral Program, with two tiers, an integration into the Nym Squad League, and a weekly raffle.

Big thanks to everyone who joined live.

:rocket: What’s Cooking at Nym

Casey opened with a roadmap pulse check:

“It’s been a fiery couple of weeks. Every single person at Nym is very busy working on something very important.”

Marketing and product are deep in a UI redesign push focused on finding product-market fit for NymVPN - getting it into as many hands as possible worldwide. The next release is on final cook in testing.

The new community RC channel is open and active - drop into the Nym Telegram testing topic to test nightly builds, run the latest RCs, and report bugs. (Or grab them straight from GitHub releases if you prefer.)

“You’re the real people who use it. We built it for people like you. Sharing your feedback has been really crucial.”

:wrapped_gift: The Referral Program - Two Tiers

Tier 1 (everyone):

  • You refer someone → 1-month NymVPN free pass for you
  • They get a 1-month free trial instead of the usual 7 days

Tier 2 (Nym Squad League members): direct NYM token rewards

  • 500 NYM per successful 1-year subscription referral
  • 800 NYM per successful 2-year subscription referral

Plus a weekly raffle: every referral is a lottery ticket; 10,000 NYM tokens drawn weekly on community calls.

Sudo on why this matters now:

“What I’ve seen in the privacy space, which I really like about it, is that it’s very hard to gain trust here. One of the ways to invoke trust in others is to spread the word mouth to mouth.”

:slot_machine: Squad League Integration - 5.6M NYM On The Table

This is the biggest-scale activity inside the Nym Squad League to date. The Squad Wealth Fund currently holds about 5.6 million NYM in reserve, growing every season, and the team is ready to dedicate the entirety of it to the referral program if community uptake demands.

“It basically opens up the Nym Squad League in a way that it hasn’t been so far.”

:locked_with_key: Privacy Implications - Honestly Stated

A referral program is a social graph by nature. Casey wrote the NymHub privacy statement on exactly what that means in practice:

  • Your nym1 account number gets linked to successful referrals coming in
  • The data falls under GDPR
  • Connections can often be unrelated to you personally, but the link exists while it’s needed

Sudo’s PSA:

“If you know someone is about to topple a government or something - don’t invite them through.”

The upside: free passes are the most anonymous activation method NymVPN has. Even more than Monero or cash payments. A free pass redemption is one link, tied to no user, no payment, no account info.

“If you have someone who could use that, maybe that’s the place to drop your free pass to.”

Plus no card needed - perfect for handing trial access to someone who can’t or won’t pay yet.

:artist_palette: New NymHub + Nym.com Revamp

The redesigned NymHub is live (work by Salazar plus community contributors) - new colour palette, multi-space structure, a place for the referral program leaderboard.

Casey also teased: a new version of nym.com is coming. New visuals, new messaging, new ways of presenting the technical depth in fewer words.

:red_question_mark: Q&A Highlights

Q: Can I manage referrals from the app? Not yet - web only for now. The accounts page is coming to the app. In the meantime, your referral code lives at NymVPN referrals program | Nym (and on the NymHub leaderboard once it’s populated next week).

Q: Multi-level / pyramid referrals - does my referee’s referee count for me? V1 is single-level only. The team considered multi-level but rejected it: longer data retention on the social graph, way higher complexity, and (per Salazar) the connotation isn’t great. They’ll revisit if demand is loud.

Q: Split tunneling status? Working on Windows. The big unlock is 3-way per-app tunneling (clear net / fast mode / anonymous mode) which is the dream feature for both Casey and Sudo, but hard given NymVPN’s tunneling logic. iOS still trickier than other platforms (Mark covered why in the previous Town Hall). Existing alternative today: the SOCKS5 proxy works for Telegram, browsers, and basically “knock your socks off” with whatever else you want to route.

Casey’s stretch goal: referral QR codes on the phone app, ready to deploy at protests, raves, or “in the grocery store, in the cereal aisle, to someone pushing a stroller next to me.”

Thanks to Casey for joining from Brussels and for the candid privacy framing. Sudo wrapped by flagging the upcoming Snowden revelations anniversary, which “actually led to the founding of Nym in a lot of ways” - an apt day to launch a tool aimed at putting privacy in more hands.
